What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics, popularly known as braces treatment, is a specialty in dentistry that roughly corrects crooked teeth and incompatibility between jaws.

Ortodonti Uzmanı Kimdir?

Orthodontics is the first branch of dentistry in the world to be considered a specialty. In our country, dentistry is accepted as a specialty by law. Dentists who complete 5 years of dentistry education receive the title of “orthodontic specialist” after successfully completing at least 4 years of orthodontic specialist training. Orthodontic treatment; When done without sufficient knowledge and experience, it can cause irreparable damage to the teeth and surrounding tissues. You can inquire whether your doctor is an orthodontist or not on the Turkish Orthodontic Association website. For example, to find out whether your doctor is an orthodontist working in Alanya district, you can press the “Search Orthodontist” button on the home page of the Turkish Orthodontic Association website, enter your doctor’s name and surname information and search by typing Alanya in the city section. Or, you can understand whether your doctor is an orthodontist by looking at whether the sign in the clinic or office where your doctor works says “Orthodontist” or “Orthodontic Specialist”.

At what age is orthodontic treatment performed?

Children, teenagers and adults may need orthodontic treatment if their teeth or jaw structure are damaged. Orthodontic treatment can be performed at any age from 7 to 77, but there are differences in the methods to be used and the treatment duration. The important thing in orthodontic treatment is to provide the right treatment at the right time. The time of orthodontic treatment may vary depending on the type of disease and from person to person.

It would be beneficial to perform the first orthodontic examination at the age of 6-7, when our children’s permanent teeth begin to erupt after the primary dentition. We should not forget that healthy milk teeth will be a guide for healthy permanent teeth in the future. For this reason, we recommend that our children have dental check-ups before their permanent teeth start to appear.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment duration varies depending on the need to correct the teeth and jaw structure. On average it can last between 18 months and 24 months, but in some cases it can be shorter or longer.

What should be taken into consideration during treatment?

In order for the treatment to be successful, patients must make as much effort as the doctor. It should not be forgotten that it is very important to maintain adequate oral hygiene throughout the treatment. Otherwise, it should be known that brushing teeth will become more difficult as wires enter the mouth, plaque accumulation around the teeth will become easier, and the risk of tooth decay will increase. However, with good oral hygiene, tooth decay can be prevented during orthodontic treatment. Brackets transmit the force to the teeth during treatment. Since the force transmission to the teeth will be interrupted as a result of the breakage of the brackets, the duration of braces treatment is prolonged. The patient must be careful about what he eats to prevent the brackets from breaking. Nothing should be bitten off, everything should be put into the mouth in bites. You should eat soft foods as much as possible, and the shells and seeds of foods with shells or seeds should be removed outside the mouth. If the remaining part is still hard, it should be sliced thinly or grated. Sticky foods such as chewing gum, Turkish delight and acidic drinks should be avoided.

What do we do when the treatment is over?

After orthodontic treatment, removing the wires requires serious care and follow-up to prevent the teeth from deteriorating again; It should be known that the “reinforcement” protocol should be applied. During this period, the patient must use the reinforcement device applied to him/her in accordance with the doctor’s advice. In order to prevent the teeth from deteriorating again, protection is provided with a thin wire attached to the back of the front teeth. Otherwise, more or less deterioration may occur in the teeth.
